Sun ’n Fun Waterpark began in 1979 with a single waterslide called the River Coaster Wild Water Ride. The idea for the park was originally conceived after visiting a waterpark near Chattanooga, Tennessee during the summer of 1978. Wasting no time, the current property near Kaw Lake was purchased in the fall of that year and the River Coaster opened on June 16, 1979.
By 1980 the Kiddieland rides and mini-waterslide had been added. In 1982, the main building was expanded to include a concession area, game room, gift shop and admissions area. The Challenge ride was also built in that year opening to rave reviews on July 4.
1984 brought the addition of picnic pavilions to accommodate large groups. The Blue Banana opened in June, 1985, and the Lazy River in 1986. The 18-hole mini-golf course was constructed in 1988 and the go-kart track in 1989. Additions in the 90’s included a new Lazy River entrance, more picnic shelters, the Twister ride that splashes into the Lazy River and entirely redesigned and revamped Kiddie Cove.
2000’s exciting addition was Wild Water Waves, a 200,000+ gallon wave pool. Sporting a stone-like wall and beach area, this new attraction has proved to be great fun for everyone. Bumper boats were installed in 2001. Major renovations in the last couple of years have centered on a new larger parking lot and a new entrance building on the west side of the property. The original entry is now the Patio Grill and Games building.
In 2004, the kiddie ride area was re-located, the mini-golf course renovated and another picnic shelter added. Come check it out!
